Odd Nerdrum is one of the foremost currently alive classical artists who find their role models and teachers of the old masters. Internationally, he is considered to be the most significant classical figurative painter and he has formed a school for a new generation of figurative painters. Already in his first public exhibition in 1964 he was regarded as the most distinctive, with his old-masterly, figurative and heavy paintings, among the seven young artists who were invited to the June exhibition at the Artists’ Association.

One of Nerdrums most famous and provocative work is ”The murder of Andreas Baader” from 1977-1978, where he presents the German terrorist Andreas Baader as an offering, perhaps as a martyr. The painting’s composition and clear chiaroscuro presents a clear relationship with Caravaggio’s paintings, for example, painting ”Martyrdom of Matthew” (1600). Another remarkable work is ”Self-portrait in golden robes” of 1998 in which he depicts himself with an erect penis. He has through his style and his view of art repeatedly created public debate on art in Norway. Nerdrum has had a number of exhibitions and achieved great commercial success. In December 2003 he moved to Iceland, but he now lives in Rødvik Farm in Stavern, Norway. During the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s Odd Nerdrum, along with among others Bjørn Fjell, Arne Paus and Karl Erik Harr, arranges a series of exhibitions under the title ”Romantikk og Realisme”.

Odd Nerdrum’s work is held in several public collections worldwide including in the United States: the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, New York, New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA), New Orleans, Louisiana, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD), San Diego, California, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art, Cleveland, Ohio, and in Norway, the National Gallery in Oslo. Odd Nerdrum is  represented in Sweden by Artnet Scandinavia.
